It’s All Natural Myth # 1

Seller: Our products are all natural and certified by the FDA in the USA and do not contain SLS/SLES, parabens, propylene glycol and other nasty chemicals.

Dr. Mike (Indochine Natural): But the FDA does not certify cosmetics products.

Seller: You are wrong, we have registered our products with the Voluntary Cosmetic Registration Program in the USA, so they are certified by the FDA!!!

THE FACTS:

(1) Quoted directly from the FDA website: “Cosmetic products and ingredients are not subject to FDA premarket approval authority, with the exception of color additives.”(see: http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/ucm074162.htm)

(2) The FDA does not restrict or ban the use of SLS/SLES, parabens, and propylene glycol. Therefore it is a bit of nonsense for the seller to imply that somehow the FDA has certified their products as “natural” because they do not contain these ingredients

(3) The Voluntary Cosmetic Registration Program (VCRP) only applies to cosmetic products sold in the United States. Quoted directly from the FDA website “The VCRP is not a cosmetic approval program or a promotional tool. ….Registration of a… cosmetic product…does not mean that FDA has approved the firm or its products …Any representation in labeling or advertising that creates an impression of official approval because of registration …is considered misleading. Misleading labeling makes a cosmetic misbranded, and marketing a misbranded cosmetic is against the law.’ See http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/VoluntaryCosmeticsRegistrationProgramVCRP/default.htm).

(4) Some Indochine Natural products have been registered with the FDA in the USA because we do distribute these in the United states. Copies below is part of one of these registrations that makes it quite clear that even though a registration number has been allocated by the FDA, there is no way that the FDA endorses or approves the product:
