Dish Wash Soap made from Recycled Cooking Oil

Indochine Natural Sdn. Bhd. in cooperation with the Asia Community Service's Stepping Stone Centre is very excited to launch in January 2010 our 100% biodegradable dish wash paste made from recycled cooking oil. Pure Kaffir Lime essential oil is used to provide a fresh fragrance for this very eco-friendly kitchen product, and we are packaging this together with a biodegradable kitchen loofah.

Our partner, the Stepping Stone Centre in Balik Pulau, provides a work place for people with special needs. By providing work for members with intellectual disabilities, the Centre provides a stepping-stone for improved economic independence and greater acceptance in the broader community.

The dish wash paste is made entirely from recycled cooking oil, which is simply saponified (converted into soap) with the addition of a strong alkali. 100% natural Kaffir Lime essential oil is then is added to provide the fragrance. After the soap has set, it is left to cure for about 30 days before being packaged.

This dish wash paste has excellent cleaning properties, can be used in cold water, is long lasting, and 100% biodegradable.

We will be exporting this product to the USA for distribution to Fair Trade retail stores. The mission of these Fair Trade retailers is to provide retail opportunities for disadvantaged communities, thereby enabling these communities to uplift and empower themselves by earning good incomes independently and with dignity and self-respect.

  1. after using the dish wash soap i felt my hands burning. and i looked up the internet to check the ingredients. well, now i know no chemicals are added.

i can only conclude that the soap has not been properly cured thus my reaction to sodium hydroxide. am i right?

i had a similar reaction to another natural soap (another brand).

  2. I am Dr. Mike from Indochine Natural:

    (1) It would be helpful if you could provide the Lot Number, which is a number appearing on the bottom of the container.

    (2) Where did you purchase the soap?

    (3) The soap has been 100% cured, and there is no sodium hydroxide remaining. We cure the soaps for at least 1 month, which is ample time.

    (4) Did anyone else in your family have the same reaction?

Your reaction is surprising, therefore we should try and understand this more.

OK, we look forward to knowing more.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

  3. 1 i dont see any lot no - only 26.10.10 written with a marker.
2 i bought it at justlife midvalley.
4 i;m the only one who does the washing up. but all other natural soaps are ok for me except this dish soap and another brand (soap bar).
or maybe it's just an allergy i m not aware of.

it's ok - i'll just use gloves or use it to wash things that don't require contact with hands.

    tks for the prompt reply.

  4. The 26.10.10 is the Lot Number and this tells us the manufacture date. The pH tests performed for this Lot tell us that there was no excess sodium hydroxide, so this is not the cause of your skin irritation.

The essential oil we use in this product is Kaffir Lime, and this contains two Allergens called Linalool and Eugenol. It would seem that this has caused your problem.

There are 16 Allergens in essential oils that we must do calculations for when making soap recipes, and even if we keep the Allergens at safe levels, certain people such as yourself will still have a sensitive reaction.

I hope this information is helpful.
